DIY Christmas Tree Stand

christmas tree stand

Hey y’all!  Guess what?  I have a Christmas post to share…SURPRISE!

I wanted to share with you a quick and easy way to make a unique Christmas tree stand.

christmas tree stand

I have dubbed this the santa bag tree stand.  Seems fitting.

I didn’t take pictures of the process, because it just kind of happened.  It was one of those…”I wonder what will happen when I do this”…moments.

Basically, I took a big cardboard box…wrapped it with a fleece throw…then tied the ribbon around it to hold it in place.  I filled it with a bunch of plastic bags and topped it off with some buffalo snow.

That’s it!  Crazy easy right?  It even turned out cute!  Score!  I got that fuzzy ribbon from Hobby Lobby.  The throw came from Ikea.  The last thing that I needed was another throw, but it was $3.99. It was fate.  You could also wrap the box with your favorite wrapping paper.

I have a story to share about that trip to Ikea.  I have a love/hate relationship with that place.  First of all, It’s annoying that they do not allow you to order online.  You are forced to go there and succumb to their never-ending maze.  I only went there to find some shelves and wouldn’t you know they only had one of the three that I needed.  That was a wasted two hours of my life.  Not really.  Can’t forget about the throw…which I am sure can be found for a dollar at the Dollar Store.

With a sigh of frustration, I leave the aisle that lacked my shelves and headed to the checkout lines.  Holding my $3.99 throw, I study the three open checkout lines that were each already 10 people deep.  I quickly debate the worthiness of this $3.99 throw.

I make my decision and pick a line.

I picked the wrong line.

In front of me were 3 women…around my age…all with toddlers.  They looked like they were having such a good time.  Laughing and giggling at the little one who was running around with a monster puppet roaring at everyone.  He was so cute…

…for about 3 minutes.  I quickly began to rethink my decision.  I thought that if I just tossed the throw to the side and head straight to the cinnamon bun line, then the trip wouldn’t be a total waste.

What seemed like an eternity later, they were finally checking out.  By now, my nerves were long gone.  So many negative thoughts had since crossed my mind.  Thoughts like, “Oh my goodness, will I be that annoying lady with the super annoying voice, speaking to her toddler loud enough for all of Ikea to hear her?”  And, “Will my toddler be the one who is screaming nonstop while standing in a long line?”.  And, “How the heck am I going to have the patience for a toddler that will be around ALL. THE. TIME. if I can’t even handle 10 minutes of this nonsense?”.

Horrible, right?

With one last squishy faced giggle from the mom, I caught myself glaring at her.  I think she caught it too.

I quickly felt horrible and quiet guilty.  Sure, by the time that I got to purchase my $3.99 throw I had a throbbing headache, but who was I to judge their joy?  Maybe it was caused by my own selfish disappointment from not getting my dang shelves, but it was still uncalled for.  Clearly, they were a family full of love and happiness and that should be celebrated.  I silently prayed a quick prayer asking for forgiveness and for that hatefulness to be replaced with love…or something of the sort.

Yes…I also know that when I have my own…things will be different.

Next time, I will better assess the situation and probably  just leave the $3.99 throw.

Onto a brighter note…how fun and cheerful is that tree all wrapped up in its makeshift santa bag?

Did you get your cinnamon bun? You have every right to your feelings. When you join the mom club, and have your own child, you will still look at other moms like that sometimes. It’s when you have your second that you get it. You get a perfect child first to trick you into having another lol! The second one is the one that will embarrass you in public. And you know what? You’ll still love him more than anything on earth :)

Love that comment, “You get a perfect child first to trick you into having another”. That’s funny stuff! No…I did not get a bun :-( Another long line that I could not handle at the time!

Your tree is adorable! LOVE, LOVE its creative tree-stand. You did a grrrrrrrreat job.
Regarding your thoughts while in the lineup at Ikea; agree with Pinky and Christy. So don’t be so hard on yourself. ☺ Yes, children will be children and I do love them too-bits however notice more and more many are just out-of-control in their behaviour in public places. With that said, bluntly ….. I don’t blame the child.

I hear ya Mrs. Ben! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! Oh…and I am glad that you like the tree!

Well first off that tree box skirt is the cutest idea! The tree is adorable too- great colors and ornaments! I feel for you regarding the kids. I have two grown kids but mine never acted like that and to this day I get a big flustered with the moms/dads that just let their kids “own” the place. It is different when they are your own that’s for sure. I hope you got your cinnamon bun!!

I am so glad that I am not the only one and I really hope that I haven’t offended anyone with this post!

Adorable! Your tree is super precious too! Great inspiration. Happy holidays to you!! Oh and p.s.my daughter NEVER acted like that in public because I would have never allowed it! She’s a happy, successful, thriving college sophomore now and glad that her momma disciplined her, and taught her to act properly :)

What a most clever solution for a stand!. I’m laughing over your Ikea comments. As much as I like Ikea, it also makes me crazy to go there because there’s no way you just run in and run out. No, you have to spend at least half a day winding your way through!

    • Reply Luisa 12 December, 2013 at 3:12 am

Haha! I know! They are clever ones…those ikea folks. So glad that you like the stand :-)

Thank you! This tree makes me so happy every single time that I look at it! I might shed a tear or two when it comes time to take it all down 😉

Yes, it IS fun and cheerful. In fact, the whole tree looks like something you’d see in a magazine. Frankly, I’m amazed that at your young age you’ve managed to collect so many pretty ornaments and decorations. Everything looks so pretty.

Thank you Pam. I am 32 years old, so I’ve had plenty of time to add to this collection of mine!

Your tree is amazing! I totally loved it, I want a white tree now, and I never liked them before.
    Cheers!

Thank you! I adored that tree. Unfortunately, I stored it in the box that it came in and it turned it yellow. :( So, if you get one, make sure that you store it in a bag!

    Hi Luisa…
I love your idea, but I noticed that your tree is an artificial tree with the understanding that the difference between a real and tree is weight, needle droppings, and the pine smell. I’d like to do this with my REAL tree. I currently live in an apartment and VERY limited items to make anything like this. Can you help me? Thanks so much. Merry Christmas to your family.
