The Coop

24 April, 2013

We have been so busy trying to prepare for the arrival of our hens…starting off with the coop.  I thought I would go ahead and show you guys our future hens…future home.

How darn cute is that wooden chicken?  Found it on Etsy.  I plan to paint the name of the coop on the chicken sign if I can ever come up with something clever enough.

The coop measures 4×4 and provides ample space for 4 lovely hens and perhaps a couple more later on down the road…

On the inside, there are 3 roosts and 3 nesting boxes.  The hens will probably fight over just one of those boxes!

The floor slides out for easy cleaning, although, it is quiet heavy!

The boxes are easily accessible from the outside.  I suppose I will need to add a lock to this…just to be on the safe side.

There is a heavy door which opens and closes by a pulley.

There is a 4×8 run, but I plan to allow supervised free ranging daily.

They will have plenty of fun scurrying about while I am out in the yard.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of big birds flying around here so I will have to keep a close watch.

Every coop needs a picket fence…

…and yes…I am fully aware that those marigolds will not last long once the hens have arrived.  Why do you suppose I planted them?  :-)

Hopefully, our chickies will be ready to be picked up in four weeks…fingers crossed.

We still have plenty of time to purchase their bedding and food and all of the “important” stuff…what?  A solar lantern isn’t “important”?  Heehee…

Oh…and every flock of hens needs a rooster to watch over them…

Found that super cute weathervane at Joannes.

CANNOT wait to join the wonderful world of backyard chicken owners!  We are super excited!!

I’ve been doing a lot of research, but if any of your guys have some words of wisdom…then do share!

Thank you so much for visiting!

What about “white chicks?” Get it?

    • Reply Luisa 24 April, 2013 at 1:57 pm

I didn’t get it at first…but then after a little explanation…ha! I am a little slow sometimes. I live in White…so they are “The White Chicks!”

Oh my, I am so excited for you!! One of my sisters and I spent most of our summers growing up (roughly age 2 to 10) with a friend of my Dad’s that had a big old country house, farm and chicken coop, it was wonderful, I often wish I could be there again. Your coop is so cute, I think you will have some really happy chickens.

That is an amazing coop!!! Did you design the plans yourself? As I have said Dad and I are interested in getting some chickens ourselves, and none of the plans I found are as nice as yours.

    • Reply Luisa 24 April, 2013 at 2:03 pm

Ummm…no. I found a local guy who builds them. He has several different sizes, but they are all basically the same. Good luck with yours!!!

Your chicken coop is adorable, love the hen sign too! They look like they will be spoiled rotten. We’ve have chickens for 12+ years. They are such fun but also work, then again we have 36 in total. Whew, talk about lots of egg gathering and washing. I’ve been thinking lately that it’s about time to have a smaller flock.
Visiting you from Met Monday, hope you drop by for a visit too.

    • Reply Luisa 1 May, 2013 at 4:11 am

Oh my gosh! That’s a lot of chickens…we will be getting 4…ha! But I know that they will still be a lot of work :-)

      • Reply Toni 1 July, 2013 at 3:13 pm

Beautiful coop!! Just love it! I said “we’ll just have four” and now we have six. I would have more but I need another coop! It’s a good number because when it’s really cold or hot your egg production decreases a bit. 6 hens helps to balance out the egg production. Chickens are addictive and I love mine!! Tip: Use construction or all-purpose sand (found at most hardware stores), not the play sand though. I use it in the coop and in the run. Keeps down the smell, flies, mites and moisture. It’s very easy to clean your coop after an all-night poop fest, too! Just use a litter box scooper then compost for use in your yard and gardens. The girls love it, too, for their daily dust baths. It’s also cooler than other coop materials. Keeps the mud down, too, when it rains. I thought it would be messier than hay or pine shavings, but it’s actually cleaner and easier to maintain. Good luck! I warn you though, it’s addictive!

Oh, love the coop.. I wish we had a way to get the eggs from the boxes like that..
just one question.. are you able to get inside ? I didn’t see a human door ?
and one hint we found out after the ckens arrived.. (10 yrs ago ) they do NOT sleep in the boxes unless there isn’t anything higher. Chickens will always roost as high as they can . rafters, top of boxes, you name it. boxes are for laying & hatching/nesting .

our ckens are free range most the time, but we shut them up in the evening. & when we are going to be gone for the day they stay in their run.

you will enjoy keeping chickens. they will each have their own personality & be so fun to watch .
    enjoy !

    • Reply Luisa 2 May, 2013 at 3:33 pm

Hi! There isn’t a “human” door, as the coop is small. There is a door though that I can fit into in order to get in there and clean. Thank you for your tips…I am sure we will be learning a lot during this whole experience! Thank you for stopping by!

Your coop is adorable. I think you are going to love having chickens and your girls will love their new home. The rooster you have is the perfect kind. I have layers and some bantams just cause they are so darn cute along with geese and ducks. The chickens are our favorite. They are just so sweet and curious. Have fun with your little flock!

    • Reply Luisa 7 May, 2013 at 3:38 am

Thank you Wanda! We always have several geese in our back yard too. When one of our neighbors asked us if we bothered to “okay” getting chickens with our next door neighbors (because of their noisiness), I was like, “Are you kidding me? Those geese are waayyyy louder than the 4 chickens will ever be!”

But, what about this? suppose you added a little information?
I am not suggesting your information is not good., but what if you added
a post title to maybe get folk’s attention? I mean The Coop is a
little vanilla. You should glance at Yahoo’s home page and watch how they create news
titles to get people to click. You might add a related video or a pic

Just my opinion, it could make your posts a little livelier.
