Gardening: You win some. You lose some.

18 July, 2012
Well…
I think that it’s safe to say that I won’t be planting any more plants for a while.
Why?
Because it’s a million bajillion degrees outside.
I always get a little excited when spring comes along.  I tend to overdo it the first couple of weeks and then I’m finished…like…sick of the yard finished.  Anyway, let’s see what has survived so far…

These are lilies that my mom brought me from her yard.  Seriously, I was pleasantly surprised that these guys bloomed AND didn’t get gobbled up by deer and rabbits.  Woohoo!

Mom also brought me some hostas from her yard.  It was awfully sweet of her.  I spent about 20 flippin hours separating and planting them.  Really.  Most of time was spent separating…the whole time I was thinking, “These were free. These were free. These were free.”  Did I mention there were 40 of them?
You can also see some coleus that I planted in the background.  The poor things take a beating from the pine cones that crash down onto them.  Clearly, I didn’t think that through.
Mom also brought me a bunch of clippings from who knows what that I was supposed to root and plant.  Yeah…those are now in plant heaven.

These guys (below) came back from last year.  The ones on the right are annuals.  I think we can thank our mild winter for their survival.

I’ve become a super big fan of hydrangeas.  So, this year I decided to grow some.  Let me rephrase that…I ATTEMPTED to grow some.

dead
I planted two of the one’s on the left and they both now look like this.  I have no idea what happened.  The pic on the right is a very dead gardenia bush.  So sad.
My mother called me a murderer.  On the other hand, the 8 limelight hydrangeas that I planted are flourishing!!limelight

Nah, I’m kidding.  That’s not really my yard, but hopefully it will look like that years down the road.  Oh, and I lied about planting 8.  I only planted 6.  Two of them are still sitting in their buckets root bound I’m sure.
The “for real” pic of my hydrangeas. :-)

I almost burned this poor guy to death, but it’s still holding on.

Okay, if I haven’t bored you to death and you’ve made it this far, I have one more pic.

My Hibiscus.

Well, 75% of what I planted last year died and only about 35% died this year.  It’s getting better!

Do any of you guys have any advice on how to grow a gardenia?  What is your favorite plant?
